Nidec Group is making a major new investment in China's rapidly expanding data center and computing infrastructure market.
On September 17, Nidec subsidiary Leroy-Somer officially signed an agreement to establish a smart generator manufacturing base for computing infrastructure in Tianning District, Changzhou, Jiangsu Province.
The project involves a planned investment of more than US$100 million and will occupy approximately 150 mu of land. The facility will manufacture industrial generators primarily for data centers, computing centers and other applications requiring highly reliable power generation equipment.
The new manufacturing base is scheduled to commence operations in early 2028. According to information released about the project, cumulative taxable sales over its first ten years of operation are expected to exceed RMB 20 billion.
The investment reflects growing demand for power generation equipment supporting data centers and AI computing infrastructure, where continuity of power supply is a critical operational requirement.
Nidec is one of the world's leading integrated electric motor manufacturers. Its subsidiary Leroy-Somer, a long-established French industrial motor and alternator manufacturer, serves as one of Nidec Group's core brands in the generator business.
Leroy-Somer has extensive experience in generator design and manufacturing, with products covering low-, medium- and high-voltage generator applications.
Its generator products are widely used in industrial and commercial power generation applications, including generator sets designed for data centers and other mission-critical facilities.
For these applications, generator and alternator performance is particularly important. Data center standby power systems must be capable of supporting critical electrical loads when utility power is interrupted or when abnormal grid conditions occur.
As AI computing clusters and hyperscale data centers increase their power density, the requirements placed on standby power infrastructure are also becoming more demanding. Generator systems must provide high availability, dependable starting performance and stable electrical output while integrating with increasingly sophisticated power distribution and control architectures.
The Changzhou project will give Nidec and Leroy-Somer additional manufacturing capacity to address this growing market.
The rapid construction of AI data centers and computing hubs is changing the demand profile of the power generation industry.
Unlike many conventional commercial facilities, data centers require exceptionally high levels of power availability. Even short interruptions can affect servers, storage systems, network equipment and other critical IT infrastructure.
As a result, standby generator sets remain a key component of the data center emergency power architecture.
Depending on the facility design, multiple generator sets may be deployed using redundant configurations to ensure that critical loads can continue operating during a utility outage or other power event.
The alternator is a core component of these generator sets, converting the mechanical power supplied by the engine into electrical power for the facility.
For data center applications, requirements typically extend beyond basic generating capacity. System designers must also consider transient response, voltage regulation, load acceptance, synchronization, redundancy, system reliability and compatibility with the facility's electrical distribution architecture.
The continued expansion of AI computing capacity therefore creates opportunities not only for complete diesel generator set manufacturers, but also for alternator manufacturers, engine suppliers, control-system providers and other companies throughout the critical-power supply chain.
Changzhou has a significant industrial base in electrical equipment and advanced manufacturing.
The city has developed a broad supply chain covering power transmission and distribution equipment, electrical components, precision manufacturing and other power-related industries. This industrial ecosystem provides potential supply-chain advantages for a large-scale generator manufacturing operation.
Changzhou officials said the new project is expected to strengthen collaboration between upstream and downstream companies in the local power equipment sector while improving the competitiveness of the regional industrial cluster.
Michael Briggs, President of Nidec's Motion & Energy business, said the company values Changzhou's established industrial supply chain and business environment and plans to accelerate construction of the facility in order to respond to growing market demand.
The project is also expected to stimulate opportunities for local suppliers involved in electronic components, precision machining and advanced power equipment.
The Changzhou manufacturing base represents another expansion of Nidec's production capabilities in China and highlights the increasing importance of power generation equipment within the AI infrastructure supply chain.
As computing centers grow larger and power density continues to rise, reliable standby generation is becoming an increasingly important part of data center infrastructure planning.
For generator manufacturers, alternator suppliers and diesel generator set OEMs, this trend is creating a market in which equipment reliability, electrical performance, manufacturing capacity and lifecycle support are increasingly important competitive factors.
By establishing a dedicated smart generator production base in Changzhou, Nidec and Leroy-Somer are positioning additional manufacturing capacity close to one of the world's fastest-growing markets for data center and computing infrastructure.
The more than US$100 million investment, combined with the facility's focus on industrial generators for mission-critical applications, also demonstrates how generator manufacturing is becoming increasingly connected with the broader expansion of AI computing and digital infrastructure.
Once the Changzhou facility enters operation in early 2028, it is expected to become an important part of Nidec and Leroy-Somer's generator manufacturing footprint and support growing demand for reliable power generation equipment serving data centers and computing facilities.
