The rapid expansion of artificial intelligence, cloud computing and digital infrastructure is transforming requirements for reliable power generation worldwide. For data centers, advanced manufacturing facilities and other mission-critical infrastructure, dependable standby power is no longer simply an auxiliary system—it is an essential part of operational continuity.
Against this backdrop, global power solutions provider HIMOINSA is accelerating its development strategy in South Korea.
In a recent interview with Korean energy and electrical industry publication Electric Times, Marco Perillo, HIMOINSA APAC Director, discussed trends shaping the global generator set market, evolving requirements for power reliability, and the company's medium- and long-term plans for South Korea.
Founded in 1982 and headquartered in Spain, HIMOINSA specializes in the development, manufacturing and commercialization of generator sets, lighting towers and battery energy storage systems.
The company operates in more than 130 countries and regions and has nine production facilities worldwide, supported by an established international sales and service network.
A significant milestone came in 2015, when HIMOINSA joined the Yanmar Group.
The combination brought together Yanmar's more than a century of expertise in engine technology with HIMOINSA's capabilities in power generation system design, manufacturing and integration.
For the Asia-Pacific market, HIMOINSA primarily relies on its manufacturing operations in China and Spain to serve growing regional demand for reliable power solutions.
According to Perillo, the diversity of Asian markets means that a single standardized commercial strategy is not sufficient.
Countries across the region differ substantially in industrial development, infrastructure maturity and power requirements. HIMOINSA therefore emphasizes localized strategies tailored to individual countries, industries and applications.
This approach is particularly relevant in mature infrastructure markets such as South Korea, Japan and Australia, where AI, cloud computing and data center development are increasing demand for high-reliability power systems.
To support these increasingly complex projects, HIMOINSA has established a dedicated Power Solutions and Engineering team, strengthening its capabilities in project planning, system integration and technical support.
Perillo describes the relationship between Yanmar and HIMOINSA as highly complementary.
In a generator set, the engine represents the core prime mover and, according to the interview, typically accounts for approximately 70% to 80% of the overall equipment value and performance.
Even before HIMOINSA joined the Yanmar Group, the two companies had worked together for years, with HIMOINSA using Yanmar engines across generator set applications.
That established relationship provided a strong foundation for subsequent technology integration.
One of the most important recent examples is the HIMOINSA HGY Series.
The HGY generator set range is powered by Yanmar's new high-output GY Series engines and offers power ratings of up to 3 MW per unit.
According to HIMOINSA, the platform combines fuel efficiency, dynamic response and operational reliability, extending the company's product portfolio into higher-power mission-critical applications.
This capability is particularly relevant for data centers, industrial manufacturing facilities, critical infrastructure and large commercial projects, where standby power systems must meet demanding reliability and performance requirements.
HIMOINSA views South Korea differently from markets where purchasing decisions are driven primarily by initial equipment cost.
According to Perillo, Korean customers place considerable emphasis on product quality, technical performance, equipment reliability, durability, technical support and after-sales service.
These characteristics align closely with HIMOINSA's positioning in the premium power generation market.
South Korea's strategic importance is also increasing as investment expands across AI data centers, construction, defense and industrial manufacturing.
Data centers are particularly significant.
The growth of AI infrastructure is increasing demand for standby power systems capable of supporting mission-critical loads where interruptions to electrical supply can have substantial operational consequences.
HIMOINSA is developing the Korean market together with its official local partner, Kwangnam Company.
Although HIMOINSA considers itself to still be at an early growth stage in South Korea, the company plans to increase investment in brand development, industry exhibitions, local inventory, engineering support and after-sales capabilities over the coming years.
The global data center standby power market has traditionally been dominated by major international manufacturers including Cummins, Caterpillar and MTU.
HIMOINSA believes its integration with Yanmar gives it greater capabilities to compete in this segment, particularly through access to internally developed and manufactured high-end engine technology.
The company points to a significant recent project as evidence of its growing position in the market.
Last year, HIMOINSA signed a contract with a major Chinese EPC company to supply generator sets with a combined capacity of 200 MW for a data center project.
For large-scale data center applications, generator sets must deliver far more than nameplate power output. The equipment needs to support fast response, stable power delivery and reliable continuous operation under demanding operating conditions.
HIMOINSA has therefore developed a broad high-power generator set portfolio designed to address the requirements of hyperscale and mission-critical data center projects.
The company is also constructing a new Power Solutions production facility in Spain to expand manufacturing capacity and strengthen its ability to deliver large-scale projects worldwide.
Environmental performance is another part of HIMOINSA's technology strategy.
The company currently offers engine solutions compliant with U.S. EPA Tier 2 and European Stage V emissions requirements.
At the same time, HIMOINSA is preparing its product portfolio for the longer-term transition toward lower-carbon power generation.
Its technology roadmap includes support for renewable fuels such as biodiesel, while development activities are also progressing in natural gas and hydrogen engine technologies.
The objective is to give customers additional options as emissions regulations, sustainability requirements and corporate decarbonization targets evolve.
Perillo's relationship with the Korean market predates his role at HIMOINSA.
During his earlier career with Fiat Group, he was responsible for powertrain activities that included supplying commercial vehicle engines to Korea.
Despite Fiat having almost no established sales base in the Korean market at the time, close cooperation with local customers resulted in an order for approximately 3,000 engines for Tata Daewoo Commercial Vehicle within one to two years.
Perillo says the experience demonstrated several characteristics of the Korean market that remain relevant today.
Customers expect suppliers to understand technical details, deliver consistent product quality and reliability, and provide responsive technical and after-sales support.
Although his current focus has shifted from automotive engines to large-scale power generation equipment and integrated power solutions, he sees these customer expectations as fundamentally unchanged.
For HIMOINSA, developing the Korean market therefore involves more than selling generator sets. The strategy centers on building long-term relationships backed by local engineering, technical support and lifecycle service.
HIMOINSA identifies three major elements of its competitive strategy in South Korea: a strong local partner, comprehensive technical service, and flexible engineering and customization capabilities.
Its local partner, Kwangnam Company, represents both HIMOINSA generator sets and Yanmar engines.
This gives the organization experience across both the complete generator set and its engine technology, enabling it to provide customers with technical support covering the complete power generation system.
HIMOINSA's service approach extends from equipment supply to installation and commissioning, technical training, spare parts supply and after-sales support.
For mission-critical facilities, long-term service capability can be just as important as the performance of the generator set itself.
Customization is another major focus.
Modern data centers, semiconductor manufacturing plants and other critical industrial facilities can have significantly different requirements for system voltage, acoustic performance, installation footprint, control systems and operating modes.
Highly standardized generator platforms can create limitations when unusual project specifications have to be accommodated.
HIMOINSA's approach emphasizes engineering flexibility and system integration, allowing generator set configurations to be adapted to the technical and operational requirements of individual projects.
HIMOINSA acknowledges that it entered the Korean market later than some established international generator brands.
However, the company believes it now has the fundamental capabilities required for long-term expansion: European generator set design and manufacturing expertise, Yanmar engine technology, manufacturing capacity in Asia, and an experienced local partner.
Looking ahead, HIMOINSA expects continued investment in AI, data centers, advanced manufacturing, infrastructure and defense to support demand for high-reliability power generation solutions in South Korea.
Its medium- and long-term objective is to establish HIMOINSA as one of the important companies in the Korean power generation equipment market and as a long-term partner for customers requiring mission-critical power.
For HIMOINSA, achieving that objective will depend not only on generator set technology, but also on combining global engineering resources with localized inventory, application engineering, commissioning, spare parts availability and responsive after-sales support.
As Korea's critical power requirements become more sophisticated, that combination of engine technology, generator set engineering, customization and local service will form the foundation of HIMOINSA's strategy for sustained growth in the market.
